Saturday's performance against Sturt was very much a 'mixed bag'.  The start of the game suggested that we were playing team football but did not reward ourselves sufficiently on the scoreboard. The middle two quarters demonstrated two significant things:

1. The quality of player depth at Sturt is excellent. With eight changes to their previous team Sturt dominated the game. Their enthusiasm and skill were evident.

2. Our discipline, skill and decision making levels fell away dramatically.

This presented an enormous challenge to the Glenelg players at three quarter time. It is a credit to the players that in the final term they were able to rediscover the things that work. They started to find targets with their disposals, the ball movement was quicker and there was more protection for the ball carrier. Such a change in playing fortune can only occur if the playing group as a whole possesses strong leadership qualities. Strong leadership provided a sense of calm and control in difficult and challenging circumstances and this is what enabled the players to know what they had to do. They are to be respected for this. The challenge is to maintain this level of calm and control for the duration of the game.

Thank you again for the wonderful support at Challenge Recruitment Oval on Saturday.

It was a great day for our Club.

Once again a very slow start today but to Sturts credit they really played well in the first quarter and put us under huge pressure. But like what has happened a lot of times this year the boys just stuck at our structures and disciplines and maintained there composure to go in at half time within reach. We addressed a few issues at halftime and put a plan in place for the second half.

The lads carried that out perfectly and at three quarter time we put ourselves in a position to win the game. Then in the last quarter we maintained our intensity and came out winners.

The most important things we got out of the game was our ability to believe in ourselves and our game plan, which will give the guys a lot of confidence going forward to this weeks game against North which is another team above us.

This was a critical game for us against quality opposition and to win the way we did was a very good effort. After a reasonably even first quarter, we kicked ten goals to one in the second quarter, based on quick and effective ball movement and a high level of intensity all over the ground. The pressure we put on our opponents throughout the game was very good, particularly our chasing and tackling, while our work around the stoppages was much improved. We worked well as a tight unit and maintained a strong commitment to team-based football throughout the match.

We played against a very good football side today, and gave a good account of ourselves. The game itself was like a game of chess with both sides having their chances to put away the other side. Sturt started well and at one stage were 4-5 goals up and we managed to claw our way back into the game, and at 3 quarter time we were only 1 goal behind. We played an exceptional 18 minutes of footy where we should have blown the game away, but poor finishing in front of goal and a silly lapse in concentration late in the quarter saw Sturt keep its unbeaten status.

The back 6 played very well as a unit and I was pleased with the way we responded after a slow start. Cain McGrath was easily our best player and he was ably supported by Lachy Earl and Michael Bennett in the Ruck.
