Yesterday’s game against Port presented a tough challenge to our players. Port controlled the game in the first quarter and for much of the second. Significantly the players maintained their composure in a physically testing environment.  Although we scored 2 goals and 10 behinds for the quarter and went to the long break with a deficit of 19 points there was a belief amongst the group that they had created a momentum shift. A stronger man on man emphasis and excellent self belief made for a 6 goals 5 behinds to 1 goal 1 behind third quarter.

It is to the credit of the players that, under pressure, they were able to maintain their discipline, composure and commitment to our structures and style of play and win a game by coming from behind. We had strong contributions from the whole playing group.

It was a great weekend for the Club with all four grades winning. The under 17’s achieved a 100+ point turn around to win by over 10 goals, the under 19’s defeated the previously unbeaten top team by 10 goals and our reserves played at their very best to win by over 15 goals.

The support at Challenge Recruitment Oval yesterday was exceptional. Thanks to everyone for that and we look forward to seeing you all at Elizabeth in a fortnight’s time.

After any break it is always a worry on how you might perform, but obviously there was no need because the boys certainly came to play, and put together the best performance this year with a powerfull and disciplined game.

The boys started strongly and never took the foot off the pedal. Its one thing you like to see is that killer instict, and they definately had that on Monday. This game will be a game i would like to set as our bench mark and always aspire to perform at that level.

Well another week off, so another week we have to manage correctly and make sure the boys are ready to go when we head out to Hamra Homes Oval next weekend.

The best aspect of Saturday’s game was how even our effort was – everyone contributed strongly and we maintained a high level for 4 quarters against a previously unbeaten opponent, winning every quarter.

The key to the game was our quick movement of the ball and the pressure we were able to maintain on the opposition all over the ground. We played in front, contested strongly and used the corridor effectively.

We had a huge turnaround this week after a 23 goal loss the previous week against the same side. This was easily our most disappointing effort for the year. However a week is a long time in football, and we were very pleased with the efforts of the 21 players who reperesented the GFC. We started extremely well and won a lot of contested footy and our run from all over the ground was terrific. We had some good targets up forward who led very hard and created space for others. At half time it was pleasing to see the scoreboard change from the previous week, and reflect that our hard work was paying dividends on the scoreboard. Port came back and challenged us well in the 3rd quarter and we were very pleased with the way that the boys finished off the game. It was nice for everyone to have that winning feeling again. Best players were hard to pick this week as we thought all contributed really well to the win.

U17 Coach
