Friday night's win over Norwood at Cooper's Stadium was the team's most complete performance in terms of evenness of contribution from every player. The discipline of the players to maintain their commitment to team football was testimony to the leadership of the whole playing group. The intensity around the ball was another feature which created a large proportion of contested balls going our way. Goal kicking accuracy is clearly an area to be improved upon.

We now enter a phase of the season which needs to be managed well as we prepare for Port Adelaide at Challenge Recruitment Oval on Monday June 9th which is followed by a bye and then Central at Hamra Homes Oval on Saturday June 21st.

We will be following Adam Fisher, Brett Backwell, Ben Kane and Trevor Cranston very closely in this week's state game against Victoria. All four players have had excellent seasons so far, thoroughly deserve their selection and are capable of making a strong impact at this level of football.

Saturday’s result was disappointing because the game was really there to be won. We played a solid first half and led by 3 goals at half-time, based on a strong team commitment to putting pressure on them, particularly through our chasing and tackling. Our movement of the ball wasn’t as quick or clean as we would have liked but our work-rate was good.

What cost us the game was a very poor third quarter where we allowed them to take the initiative, particularly around the stoppages, and outscore us by 6 goals. During this quarter our pressure dropped away and we stopped running for each other and moving the ball into the Forward 50 with any clear purpose. We came back in the final quarter but missed some opportunities to score goals and ended up 10 points in arrears.

What we need to take away from this game is the importance of maintaining focus and work-rate for 4 quarters.

This week we played our 52nd player for the year – which represents a huge turnover of players in the first 9 weeks. Obviously this presents some challenges to the playing group with a lack of knowledge of structures and personnel evident at times on match days, but to the credit of the playing group, we have shown that we are competitive for long periods of the game. For the past 3 weeks, we have faded in the last half of the 3rd quarter and Norwood were able to win the game with a 15 minute burst in the 3rd quarter. At the end of the game, we entered Norwood’s forward line on 4 fewer occasions, but ended up struggling to kick a winning score. As an example - in the 3rd quarter we dominated possession of the footy for the first 12-15 minutes and went forward 10 times without scoring and Norwood capitalised with 5 goals in quick succession after this.

Clint Diment continued his strong form with a best afield display in the midfield, Ben McIntyre had the ball on a string for the first 2 quarters, Chris Pampakoudis marked strongly for 5 goals up forward in his best effort of the year, Matt Snook played really well and used the footy exceptionally well, Ben Lockett was once again a tower of strength for us in the back half and Jacob Carger played very well and is a player of the future.

We will continue to strive to improve each week and will hopefully return to the winners soon. Congratulations to Adam Carey who played Reserves on the weekend and to Daniel Scott-Collins and Hayden Jolly who continue to show great form up in the Under 19’s each week.

U17 Coach
