Our round 1 loss against South Adelaide was an experience we all would have preferred not to have had. Significantly however it would seem that is served a purpose. It demonstrated loud and clear that attitude is everything when we prepare to play. The level of discipline displayed by the whole group over the whole game was the most outstanding aspect of the effort. The opposition and the conditions on the day required a special style of game and the players were able to keep to that requirement and were rewarded for it.

This Friday night at Norwood another special effort will be required against a very much in form Norwood team. Once again developing the right attitude will be the most important part of our preparation.

After a tough match last week it was very important that we bounced back against South this weekend. The conditions tested both teams but our discipline right across the ground was excellent, and we finally got away to a good start which is what we have been working on over the last couple of weeks.

Our ability to play four quarters is still a problem, but it seems we are doing enough in the quarters we are winning, which is not the way we want to play and we certainly dont want to rely on that. Also it is very important for the players development to continue to play out the full game with intensity, so once again it will be our focus this weekend against Norwood.

We made a slow start to this game, outscored 5 goals to 1 in the first quarter before playing a much better second quarter and leading by a couple of goals at half time.

In the second half we had 24 scoring shots to their 8, completing dominating the play but not making the most of our opportunities in front of goals with the final margin being 3.19.

The real positive from the game was the way we moved the ball after quarter time and the number of Inside 50s and scoring shots we created. The major area for improvement is clearly our kicking for goal which will certainly be a focus at training this week.

Like last week’s effort against North Adelaide, the boys were very much in the game half way through the 3rd quarter. Again, we lost our way primarily through the midfield and we felt as if this was probably our worst performance for the year. In reflecting on our performance after the game, we realised that we still have much upside to our game particularly as we are a very young group – 14 of the 21 players are still eligible for at least next year in the Under 17’s, which provides plenty of promise for the future.

Better players on the day included Andrew Bradley, Adam Perryman, Ben Lockett, Michael Bennett, Liam Bennett and Clint Diment.

U17 Coach
