Sunday's win over West Adelaide at Challenge Recruitment Oval was a good four quarter effort. The scores at the quarter and half time breaks may not appear to support this summary but our intensity indicators suggested that the players were providing consistently strong efforts. There was a degree of frustration at half time because the scoreboard reward for effort was not there.

Perhaps the most significant aspect of the win was the way in which the players responded to their frustration. They were able to execute the required style of play far more effectively after half time and subsequently reward themselves by scoring more frequently.

We now look to recovery well and prepare to take on Sturt at Unley. Ben Mules plays his 100th game this Saturday. It would be great to see the same support for Glenelg and Ben as we had at Challenge Recruitment Oval yesterday.

Senior Coach

Following our first two matches where we really only played for 1½ and 2 quarters, we set ourselves to play 4 quarters of football in Saturday night’s game. From that point of view it was a much better effort and, even though we didn’t win the game, there were many positives to take away as well as a number of areas to learn from.

Our intensity was good, particularly the pressure we put on them through our strong attack on the ball and our tackling. We were significantly outsized across most positions but we made a strong contest and ran the ball out of our defence and through the midfield for much of the game. We need to continue to work on moving the ball quickly, giving the ball first time and hitting targets with hand and foot.

After the excitement of Wednesday night, we travelled to the Happy Valley Oval where we played after the Happy Valley and Flagstaff Hill Junior and Senior Games with the Under 19’s playing afterwards and under lights.

The first quarter was very tight and close with both sides playing some fast running football. In the 2nd quarter we managed to place a ton of pressure on the West Adelaide players, and up forward we had a number of players who were able to take some good marks and convert truly.

We continued this trend in the 3rd quarter and we were most pleased with our ability to make good decisions under pressure. We tired in the last quarter with the game safely in our keeping and West kicked the last 4-5 goals of the game. We just seemed to lose shape in the middle of the ground and this is something that we will need to continue working on for the rest of the year.

It was very difficult to pick our best players which was most pleasing, but we settled on Josh Giddings who played a terrific game at Centre Half Forward, Hayden Jolly who moved forward this week and kicked 6 goals and Seb Tape from the back half. Other good players were Craig Pitt, Ben McIntyre, Alex Carey, Andrew Bradley and Daniel Scott-Collins.

Ian Cox

U17s Coach
