MICKAN STAYS WITH THE BAYS

Glenelg Football Club is thrilled to announce Senior Coach Mark Mickan has extended his coaching contract with the Bays until the end of season 2011.

Mickan will become the Club’s equal second longest serving coach in successive years with Graham Cornes and behind Neil Kerley having commenced as Glenelg Football Club’s Senior Coach in the 2006 SANFL season.

Gary Metcalf, President of the Glenelg Football Club was delighted at the announcement of the Coach’s contract extension.

“When Mark was first appointed in 2006 it was always with the intentions of Mark becoming a long term coach.

“We needed stability brought to our club in general, especially to our football department which had become a revolving door regarding the coaching department.

“Now, with a very well established football department - player wise, coaching wise & management wise (with Ken Applegarth Football Operations manager) - Mark has brought the professionalism stability & progression the club has been searching for a long period of time.”

Former Brisbane Captain and inaugural winner of the Adelaide Crows Best and Fairest in his playing days, Mickan’s strength as a leader and mentor has proven him to be a successful and much admired coach.

Since 2006, Mickan has taken the Bays from 6th position in 2006 to their first finals appearance since 1999 in 2007, followed by the minor premiership and a Grand Final appearance against the Bulldogs in 2008.  After 11 rounds of the 2009 SANFL season, Mickan has guided the Bays back to the top of the SANFL ladder with 7 wins and 2 losses.

“We have now given ourselves every opportunity to win one or more premierships over the next two & a half years with Mark’s appointment.  It is a very exciting time at the club & the management & football department appreciate all the support we receive.” Mr. Metcalf concluded.

Glenelg Football Club encourages all members and supporters to support the Bays at Adelaide Oval this Friday 19th June as they battle against Sturt, currently ranked second behind the Tigers on the SANFL ladder.  Under 18’s will play the curtain-raiser at 4:55pm before league first-bounce at 7:40pm.  Post-match presentations for the league will be held from 10:30pm at The Fountain Inn Hotel, 142 Glen Osmond Road, Parkside.
