Taken as a fourth round pick (no.61), Lyons is an agile player with terrific ball-winning ability, footy know-how and endurance. He averaged 21 disposals and kicked 23 goals in 16 matches with the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup in 2010. Lyons said he was hopeful of lining up for Adelaide during the pre-season. "I've set a few goals for myself. I want to try and get right for the NAB Cup and play a game or two around then. I'll see how it goes from there, but hopefully I'll be right to play a couple of games throughout the year." Lyons finished equal-third behind top-10 draft picks Josh Caddy and Dyson Heppell in the clean hands test at the draft combine in Canberra and said he was more of a natural midfielder than a forward. "I played most of this year in the midfield and had a pretty good season in the TAC Cup. Towards the end of the year as my body started to (tire) and I wasn't able to play at my peak I started to push forward and found it pretty good down there as well. I enjoy both positions. Playing forward is a really good thing and [I enjoy] kicking goals, but I enjoy going into the midfield and getting a bit of my own ball too."
